Today It’s All About Other Bloggers!

December 8, 2011 by admin

This morning we’re off to beautiful Victoria, B.C., where I hope we will have tea at the Empress! Yum! We will drive to Port Angeles and take the ferry over. It will be a lovely break from all the house hunting (we may have found another one, but I won’t say more for now). In the meantime, it’s Thursday, so it’s my usual day to applaud other bloggers. Today, though, as part of accepting the recent blog award from Jodi Aman, I won’t just pick one! Nope, today I get the pleasure of mentioning several of my favorites. I’ve mentioned some of these before, but they bear repeating.

By the way, Jodi not only has a great blog, but has also shared a wonderful list of bloggers. I recommend that you take a peek at Heal Now and Forever if you haven’t yet!

Without further ado, here are some, though not all, of my faves:

Zencherry – The Zen Corner – For making me laugh and recalling the warmth and spirit of Erma Bombeck.

Over 50 and Happy  – Nina Knox is such a joy, always positive and filled with effervescent life.

Totsymae – Totsymae has one of the most intriguing and original voices in the blogosphere today. She’s also one heck of an artist.

Presence of Magic – When you’re feeling down or discouraged, come here for a gentle, angelic lift.

From Agoraphobia to Zen – Marilyn Mendoza shares her honest struggle of living with agoraphobia. As someone who lives with an anxiety disorder, too, I relate to her struggles and applaud her triumphs.

GrrlGuide – Thought-provoking, interesting, meaty blog posts.

Writing and Living – Richard Hughes is not only a fine writer, but is a supporter and cheerleader for other writers as well. It’s been a pleasure to get to know his work these past few months.

Renovating Rita – A woman of resilience, intelligence, and grace. I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned her blog here before — sorry, Rita, a mention of you is way overdue!

Thus Spake the Hermudgeon – You’ll love the Hermudgeon as much as I do. She’s warm and generous, and has maintained her sense of humor despite a challenging cancer battle.

That’s more than seven, but I could just keep going. To my blogger friends, if you’re not listed here today, I’ll be back next week with more recommendations! Have a great weekend!

Today It’s All About Me

December 7, 2011 by admin

Wow, thanks, Jodi Aman of Heal Now and Forever, for the blog award! It’s always exciting to be recognized by one’s peers, especially by someone whose work I admire.

Here’s the catch: To receive the award, I need to write seven things about myself. Seven? I can usually come up with one, especially when I’m trying to make a point, but seven feels monumental. I’ll give it my best shot!

  1. My first name is Beth, after a character in Little Women. I have a sister Amy, also named from the book. Of course, I also have other siblings NOT named from the book (John, Valerie, and Bryan), but I can’t explain that. I have Beth’s shyness and Jo’s bluntness, which don’t mesh well together. I stopped going by Beth at age 33 when I decided I felt more like a Nadine…whatever that means.
  2. I spent years on a spiritual quest and ended up converting to Judaism. I am not into the rituals so much, but I love the emphasis on ethics and integrity, and the concept of tikkun olam (repairing the world) is an integral part of my philosophy.
  3. I grew up in a blue-collar household, where I was taught a strong work ethic. This is where I get my populist leanings and start spitting nails when people speak of the working class as “lazy.” I would challenge any of these pompous politicians, especially one who thinks poor children aren’t being taught to work hard, to spend one day in the shoes of these Americans who give so much and receive so little. Oops, I’m getting political again!
  4. Ill health defined much of my childhood, and in my late 30s, I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for many years. These days I am strong and energetic, and I am grateful, grateful, grateful. This is why I am so into organic, local foods, gardening, yoga, and other forms of stress reduction. Every time I hike a mountain, I remember the years that I couldn’t. I hope I always do.
  5. I graduated from college at age 45. For years I didn’t admit that I wanted to be a writer when I grew up, so I would take classes, trying to come up with something else, ANYTHING else, that I could do. Finally I gave up and admitted that good or bad, I write, and I’m not much good for anything else. Because I was still dealing with the ill health in #4 above, I finished via “distance learning” from Eastern Oregon University in an accredited degree program. Better late than never! It was a proud moment for me.
  6. Julia Cameron is my hero. I found her book, The Artist’s Way, in 1997. I had always wanted to write but didn’t know how to get started. Within three weeks of practicing the principles in her book, I started to write, and I haven’t stopped. Her work, which focuses on unblocking creativity, also led me to start quilting, taking photographs, traveling, and more. I thank her not just for the writing, but for opening my life to adventure.
  7. A former co-worker started calling me Spa Woman because I love massages and facials, hot springs, and all other forms of pampering. I liked the nickname, so I use it online frequently as an alias.

As part of accepting this award, I will pay it forward by recommending other great blogs — stay tuned! I will offer those tomorrow as part of my Thursday Books and Blogs entry. Thanks again, Jodi!

And Now, a Word From Our Sponsor…

October 17, 2011 by admin

Since last week was intense, I thought I would include some soothing photos from the Conservatory Garden in Central Park to begin our week with a smile!

Central Park
A lovely respite from protests and the overall busy-ness of NYC.

I seldom do commercials. In fact, I am squirming now with the thought of doing one at all. I blog because I love to, and I hope through my adventures that my readers see something of themselves. It’s always easier to promote the work of others.

That said, I have work of my own to promote today. At long last, The Foreign Language of Friends is now available on Amazon Kindle. In the next 2-4 weeks, it will also be available on other e-readers as well. At Amazon’s suggestion, I am creating a POD paperback version for those who want their paper books. I’ll post again once the book is available in these other formats.

I’ve priced The Foreign Language of Friends at the low, low price of $1.99, so buy early and buy often, and tell all your friends! If you haven’t seen my Friday postings before, check them out to get the first several chapters for nothin’. Yep, this is a commercial. Please buy my book! Help me keep my fabulous editor in business. She’s worth every penny. Plus, it’s a fun story. I had a great time creating it!

If you buy it and like it, may I ask one more favor? Please take a few minutes to write a review on Amazon. Thanks kindly in advance.

Now I am learning all about blog tours and am ready to gear up. I discovered BlogTour.org, which looks promising. Bryce Beattie, creator, conceived of the idea when he was working on his own blog tour. BlogTour.org matches authors who want to promote their work with blogs who are willing to feature authors. If it works, it can really simplify the process.

If you’re an author who is interested in BlogTour, take a gander at the website and sign up. You’ll find me listed there as a blogger willing to interview authors and their works, as long as they fit in with the general flavor of A Woman’s Nest.

More Flowers
It may be October, but there are plenty of flowers still in bloom!

In the meantime, my period of rest is over! My fabulous aforementioned editor, Jill Bailin, has turned Blood and Loam over to me for revisions, and it looks like she’ll be keeping me busy for a while. I also do my own book layouts, so I’ve pulled The Foreign Language of Friends into my trusty Adobe InDesign to get that done. And, I fully intend to do NaNoWriMo, which comes up in just a few weeks. Thankfully, my good She Writes friend Jodi Aman is offering a FREE 21-day meditation challenge in November, and I’ll need it to get some zen during all the craziness. It’s all good! I was getting a little cranky without a writing project, and I’m much happier when I’m juggling a lot of plates.

We’re back on track with my typical blog schedule, so I hope you’ll join me tomorrow for my latest book review. Have a great week!

Peace
Peace! Shalom! Shanti!
