A Little of This and That, NYC Style

October 30, 2013 by admin

We’re having a great time visiting New York City. My stepdaughter, Sarah, lives in Queens, so we get out here from time to time. Since we visit fairly often, we don’t need to rush around and see all the major sights. Instead, we meander, going where the mood strikes us.

This time, we met a new member of the family: Mason the dog. Mason is a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix who was rescued from a home with 60 other dogs during a recent Staten Island house fire. He’s a bit timid, but I get to play grandma and spoil him. Here he is with the dog sweater I made for him:

Yesterday, while hubby spent time with Sarah consulting with her on her business (she organized and runs the Ridgewood Market in Queens), I went to a neighborhood hair salon and got a makeover. I’m facing the double nickels b-day soon and felt the need for a new ‘do. Turns out it takes a LONG time to cover up gray hair! I’m notorious for not keeping up with these things, but I have to admit, I’m pretty happy with the look.

I'm loving the new look. I'll have to buy a straightener, though.

Monday night we went to see Big Fish on Broadway. Hubby knows this is one of my all-time favorite movies, so he grabbed tickets, even though the reviews weren’t great. I loved it! Last night we saw Buyer & Cellar, a wonderful one-man show with Michael Urie of Ugly Betty fame. Urie plays an unemployed actor who is hired to work in Barbra Streisand’s basement. It’s good, silly fun!

We’ve also visited the Museum of Chinese in America and the National Museum of the American Indian. In between, we are enjoying lots of ethnic food: Korean, Polish, and Italian (complete with gluten-free pasta).

We’ll be here a few more days, then off to Pennsylvania for a week or so before returning to the City.

Has travel been on your agenda lately? If so, where? If not, where would you like to go?

I love the new look! You look great! Makeovers can lift the spirits, can’t they? Your grand-dog is so cute, and you made him such a pretty sweater. He’s ready for winter now. 🙂 Your trip sounds wonderful. I have so many places on my travel bucket list. For now, I’d settle on just seeing the ocean again. I need to sit on the beach and look out and think.

Nothing like a trip to the beach! I remember visiting the ocean for the first time when I was about 20 years old (I grew up in the landlocked Midwest). The roar of the waves, the misty spray, and the salty smells just transported me to a new place in my brain. I think my love of travel was born right then and there.

Oh Nadine, take me to New York with you the next time you go! And I want to do the exact same things you’ve done on this trip, gray hair cover up job included! Love your make over! You look great! Roxy is wondering why I don’t knit her little sweaters like Mason’s. hee hee!

Ah, poor Roxy! If I ever meet her I’ll have to present her with her own little sweater. I’ve been told that Mason likes blue, so “grandma” will be making more in his favorite color!

I’m really loving the new hairdo. I try to live a low-chemical existence, but hair color…well, it does make a difference, seeing a younger-looking person in the mirror.
